London's summer corporate calendar — May through August — concentrates more events into a short season than any other part of the year. Client drinks, summer socials, terrace parties, mid-year celebrations, investor events, team milestone moments. For organisations running outdoor or semi-outdoor events during the warmer months, catering planning has specific considerations that do not apply to indoor autumn and winter events.
Vanda's Kitchen caters summer corporate events across London from our EC4 base near St Paul's Cathedral. Certified halal, 100% nut-free, stocked in Selfridges Food Hall, 5-star food hygiene. Our summer event catering is designed for the specific conditions of outdoor and terrace service — food that stays presentable, allergen handling that works for diverse guest lists, and presentation that matches the occasion. The specific challenges of summer event catering
Summer event catering is not simply indoor catering moved outside. Temperature affects food quality — hot dishes cool faster than indoors, cold dishes warm faster, and standing buffets have to maintain presentation across longer windows than most indoor events require. Pests and insects are a consideration on open terraces in ways they are not inside. Sun exposure affects both food and guests, meaning shade and hydration are part of the event planning rather than afterthoughts.
Guest behaviour also differs. Summer events are more often standing rather than seated, longer duration (a 6pm-9pm drinks event rather than a 12:30-14:00 lunch), and attended by guests moving between conversations rather than fixed at a table. Food service has to work for grazers holding drinks rather than diners at tables. Plates, if used, need to be easy to hold; items that require two hands are a mistake.
The third factor is guest diversity. Summer parties, client events, and corporate socials typically draw broader guest lists than internal team lunches — partners, clients, friends of clients, new joiners, vendor representatives. Dietary requirements are correspondingly less predictable, and allergen handling has to work for guests whose requirements are not pre-notified.
What good summer event catering looks like
Format choices that work in summer outdoor conditions: canapés and small bites that are easy to hold and eat in one or two bites; platters of cold proteins, cheeses, and charcuterie that present well and stay presentable; substantial salads that can serve as main-course equivalents for guests who want more than a canapé; fresh fruit and petit fours for sweet elements; breads and flatbreads for texture alongside the softer items.
Clear allergen labelling on every item matters more for mixed guest lists than for internal catering. Every dish we serve at events includes visible allergen information in line with Natasha's Law. Our kitchen is structurally halal and nut-free, which means guests with these requirements can eat from anywhere on the table without needing to interrogate the catering staff.
Presentation for event catering has to match the occasion. Proper serving boards, fresh herbs as garnish where appropriate, considered arrangement, dishes that look deliberate rather than stacked. Our event catering is plated rather than simply delivered — the presentation visible to your guests should read as intentional, not as a lunch platter scaled up.
Our summer event formats
Canapé reception catering — typically 6-10 canapés per guest across savoury and sweet, with dietary options integrated throughout rather than segregated. Menus rotate seasonally and include options like mini halal beef skewers with chimichurri, smoked salmon blinis, halloumi and fig crostini, courgette fritters, summer fruit tartlets. Vegetarian and vegan canapés are full menu items rather than afterthoughts.
Grazing and platter catering — substantial presentations sized for the guest count, designed for standing service. Typical composition includes protein platters, cheese and charcuterie, grilled vegetable selections, dips and flatbreads, and fresh fruit platters. Guests help themselves across the event window.
Bowl food — hand-held substantial portions that bridge canapé and main course. Works well for events where guests want more substantial food than canapés but seated dining isn't practical. Options include grain bowls, curry and rice bowls (with halal meat options), and summer salad bowls with protein.
Drinks support — we supply catering alongside drinks but do not provide bar service. For events requiring full bar service, we partner with drinks providers or work alongside venue bar teams. Our role is the food and its allergen-safe service.
Planning lead time for summer events
Summer event catering benefits from longer lead time than daily team lunch catering. For events over 30 guests, we recommend 10-14 days' notice; for major events, 3-4 weeks. This gives us the time to specify menus properly, source peak-season produce, and plan delivery and service logistics for outdoor or terrace locations.
Minimum event order value is £500 within our central London delivery zone. For large events we quote specifically — per-guest pricing depends on menu choice, service complexity, and guest count. For recurring summer events across a season (multiple Fridays of summer drinks, for example), we work on blanket arrangements that simplify booking across the whole series.
